The Police and the Action Fraud group have issued warnings after thousands of individuals have reported receiving emails identifying them by name and address, claiming to be from debt collection agencies or the council tax department. The debt collection companies named in the scam varies but includes legitimate companies.
The messages are said to be loaded with a malicious software which disables access to personal file and documents, and demands a payment to restores them.
“This email has been spammed out over the past couple of weeks and could catch recipients off guard as it uses a realistic domain name,” the Action Fraud warn. “If you are in doubt about any service your council provides, contact them directly.”
